To this end it is vital to prevent chronic illness and control dental health. It is safe to assume that there is a close relationship between diet and the prevention of chronic illness. One chronic illness which greatly affects the degree of activity of the elderly is osteoporosis. In recent years it has become apparent that soya beans contain non-nutrient isoflavones which serve to prevent release of calcium from the bones. The present writer has focussed attention on soya beans as a factor in the prevention of osteoporosis, and has carried out a preliminary study in Japan and the Republic of Korea. Analysis of the relationship between chronic illness and intake of soya beans and soya-based products revealed a significant difference between high and low intake in the proportion of subjects with a history of cerebral infarction and bone fracture in O township (H Prefecture), lumbago in R village (Korea) and any of these illnesses in K city (Korea).
