This study systematically reviewed literature on exercise interventions and habilitation in the field of intellectual disabilities, following the PRISMA statement guidelines for systematic reviews. Articles published between 2000 and 2024 were identified through searches in the NII Academic Information Navigator (CiNii) and PubMed using the keywords“intellectual disability,”“exercise,”and“intervention or habilitation.” After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts against predefined inclusion criteria, 14 articles were selected. The inclusion criteria were: (1) studies targeting individuals with intellectual disabilities, (2) implementation of exercise-based interventions, (3)inclusion of a comparison group, and (4) quantitative evaluation of outcomes. Among the selected articles, five were cross-sectional studies and nine were longitudinal studies. The life stages of participants included school-aged children (elementary to high school; 5 studies) and adults (9studies). Outcome measures utilized included physiological indicators, activity trackers, questionnaires assessing physical function and exercise tailored to the disability status, and surveys addressing social barriers to exercise as reported by individuals with disabilities, their families, and support staff. The findings highlighted the importance of examining the effectiveness of exercise interventions and therapy based on these prior studies, emphasizing the need for further evidence to promote the health and well-being of individuals with intellectual disabilities. |
