Today's nature of higher education has been greatly affected by the changing social conditions―― the sophisticated information society. declining numbers of 18-year-olds, and the global society where people with various values cooperate. In order to address such needs, the authors organized the Department of Childhood Studies Reform Project as faculty members, with priority given to establishing a new first-year course to supplement and develop basic academic skills. This paper reports the trial implementation of the new subject via online learning material provided by a specialist company through which students can pursue the work individually. The teachers constructed their syllabus by selecting units from tha overall content. The students took 50-minite online examinations in three subjects―― Japanese language, English, and mathematics―― before and after a three-month learning period. The results showed increased scores in the three subjects for many but not all students. Further teaching implementation and evaluation of its effects are needed to reveal factors related to students' growth and the nature of remedial education. |
