In order to grasp the actual conditions of clothes worn by pregnant women and nursing mothers, we made a questionaire survey in 1976 and saw the nationwide tendency of the use of belly-bands. The results obtained from analyzing the data by Districts were reported in Bulletin of the Hiroshima Bunka Women's Junior College Vol. 15 and Vol. 16. The present paper reports the results of our examination into the data by age group. (In the following summary, A represents the group aged 20-29, B, 30-39 and C, 40-49.) 1. It was found that about 99% of the three groups wore some kinds of bell-bands. 2. It was observed through all the three age-groups that the month most preferred to start wearing a belly-band was the fifth month of pregnancy, though it varied between the third and the eighth months. Those who began to use bell-bands by the fourth month of pregnancy were 4.7% of A, 5.1% of B and 6.8% of C, which shows that older pregnant women begin to use belly-bands earlier than younger ones. 3. In every age-group, the Day of the Dog was most preferred for the first day to wear a belly-band. This custom was seen more commonly in the older age-groups. 4. As for the kinds of belly-bands, the exclusive use of obi-type belly-bands (long, narrow strips of cloth) was commonest in all the age-groups. 77.7% of C, 58.9% of B and 52.5% of A wore obi-type belly-bands. Those who used corsets and obi-type belly-bands half and half, or those who chiefly wore corsets with occasional use of other types were 30.7% of A, 24.4% of B and 12.5% of C. 5. Those who wore the belly-bands with either words, pictures or words and pictures drawn on them were 48.4% of A, 43.5% of B and 27.3% of C. 6. The word most commonly found written on the belly-bands was 「寿」. 79.7% of B, 78.0% of A and 73.3% of C had this word. As for the pictures, 'dog' was most commonly seen in A and B, while in C 「子安大師」(a priest worshipped for easy delivery) was the commonest. 7. 43.6% of C, 39.7% of B and 32.1 % of A 'bought' their belly-bands 'for themselves,' while 27.4% of C and about 25 % of A and B were 'given by their own parents.' 8. The material of most of the obi-type belly-bands was cotton, while that of corsets was expansible cotton cloth. 9. 'Two obi-type belly-bands' were the kind and the number of belly-bands most commonly possessed by the questionees. 38.8% of C, 28.6% of B and 21.9% of A had two obi-type belly-bands. |
