In order to grasp the actual conditions of clothes worn by pregnant women and nursing mothers, we made a questionaire survey in 1976. The nation-wide tendencies of how belly-bands are worn were reported in Bulletin of the Hiroshima Bunka Women's Junior College VoL.l5 (1982). The present paper reports the results of our examination with special reference to the Seven Distrcits of the country. 1. Most questionees, 100.0% in Hokkaido and more than 98.0% in the other Districts, wore belly-bands in their pregnancy. 2. It was observed through all the Districts that a great majority began to wear belly-bands in the fifth month of pregnancy and that by the end of the fifth month 95.2 ~ 85.7% had begun to wear them. A tendency was seen that in the cold Districts the use of belly-bands started earlier. 3. In every District, the Day of the Dog was most preferred for the first day to wear a belly-band. This custom was seen most commonly in Shikoku and Kyushu (80.1%) and least commonly in Tohoku (59.1%). 4. As for the kinds of belly-bands, those who used only obi-type bands (long, narrow strips of cloth) were as many as 68.0% in Chugoku and 65.5% in Hokkaido, while those who mostly used obi-type bands with occasional use of corsets were 17.7% in Kinki and 6.0% in Hokkaido. "Corsets alone" was more commonly seen in Tohoku (19.5%) and Chubu (14.7%), while "corsets with occasional use of obi-type bands" was seen most commonly in Chubu (12.6%) and least commonly in Kanto (5.1 %). 5. The belly-bands with words written on them were most commonly seen in Kanto (50.8%) and least commonly seen in Hokkaido (4.8%). The belly-bands with pictures or picture as well as words were most popular in Kinki (20.2%). 6. 「寿」 (congratulations) was the commonest word (81.8%). Some other words such as 「戌」(dog), 「安産」 (easy delivery), hospital names and dates were also used. The pictures of dogs were seen in every District. The rest were baby, bell, crane and tortoise and Kannon (Buddhist Goddess of Mercy). 7. As for the ways of obtaining the belly-bands, those who bought the belly-bands by themselves were 73.0% in Hokkaido and 23.5% in Kinki. Those who were given as gifts by their parents were 37.8% in Chugoku. The cases where \the 'belly-bands were given by their husband's parents or by the go-betweens were very few. 8. The materials of obi-type bands were bleached cotton, white or red silk. The corsets were made of expandable cotton cloth. The belly-bands made of white or red silk were not actually used. g. An examination into the number of belly-bands possessed by the questionees showed that, in Hokkaido, 51.7% had two obi-type bands and in Kinki, 25.1 %. Those who had two sets of obi-type bands and corsets were 28.7% in Shikoku and Kyushu and 28.3% in Kinki. |
