In order to grasp the actual conditions of clothes worn by pregnant women and nursing mothers, we made a questionnaire survey in the seven districts of the whole country (Hokkaido, Tokyo and 23 prefectures) between March and May, 1976. 2,186 women in their 20th~50th who had experienced delivery were questionnaired through the Health Centers in the seven Districts of Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku and Shikoku-Kyushu. The present paper is to report the results of our examination into the data concerning belly-bands, the actual conditions of how belly-bands are worn and the wearers' sense toward them. The results obtained are as follows. 1. 98.8% of the questionees wore belly-bands in their pregnancy. Non-wearers were only 1.1%. No answer was obtained from the rest (0.1%). 2. The great majority (85.5%) started wearing belly-bands in the fifth month of pregnancy. Seen by the district, it was found that, in such cold districts as Hokkaido and Tohoku, about 10% began to wear belly -bands in the third or fourth month of pregnancy. 3. 71.3% started wearing a belly-band on the day of the Dog. This custom was most commonly seen in the Chugoku and Shikoku-Kyushu Districts where the rate amounted to about 22% of the 71.3% respectively. 4. 56.2% wore long, narrow strips of cloth alone for belly-bands, while 26.9% used corsets for pregnant women as well as strips of cloth and 12.3% used corsets alone. The rest (4.6%) wore other forms of belly-bands such as common health-bands. 5. 40.5% wore belly-bands with words or pictures of celebration drawn on them. Of the 40.5%, the great majority (88.4%) wore belly-bands with words alone, 7.0% with pictures alone and 4.6% with both words and pictures. 6. Of the words of celebration written on the belly-bands, Kotobuki (寿) was the commonest (82.3%). It was seen most commonly in the Chugoku and Kanto Districts where the rate amounted to 27.5% and 23.2% of the 71 .3% respectively. 7. As for the pictures of celebration, dogs were most popular (81.0%). 8. In spite that belly-bands are sometimes said to be of little use from medical point of view, they are still worn as they were by many pregnant women and there firmly remain superstitions and customs about them. It should be noted, however, that corsets for pregnant women have come to be used fairly widely. |
