内容記述 | It is believed that the ideal of women's education was handed down from nobles to warriors and from warriors to common people and became the basic form of the educational aim. But what aspect of the education among the spiritual, scholastic and artistic ones was emphasized was different according to education among the spiritual, scholastic and artistic ones was emphasized was different according to the social status, actual circumstances and the demand of the age. Yoritomo Minamoto, who established Kamakura feudal government, abolished what were formal and showy in the politics and culture and emphasized what were simple, actual and practical. Therefore many of the literary works in Kamakura Era are instructive and narrative. These books and Buddhism newly risen were considered to have influenced the education of warrior families and common people. The result of the inquiry into the womens education in the early middle ages putting a stress to the collections of stories, such as Jikkun-sho and Shoseki-shu is as follows: In those days there was no security of life and property on the part of women after sending their husbands to battlefields. Therefore sturdy mind, well-trained will and the spirit that never show joy and anger in order to unite and protect the members of a family or clan were nurtured. Modesty, obedience, a strong feminine virtue, the suppression of jealousy, prepared for anything to happen, affection and the will to endure hardships were carefully trained. Such virtues brought up in the home education were factors, I consider, to raise typical samurai women such as Masako Hojo, Jenni Matsushita and later as Mrs. Masashige Kusunoki and Mrs. Taketoki Kikuchi. 2. Japanese short verses, handwriting, music and sewing were also taught at home. They were taught chiefly for practical purposes and not for scholarship as they were given to the women of nobles. 3. In the early middle ages, women's social status was not low. Man and wife might have separate properties and some women were lords of manors. They secured the status of responsibility in the household management. | |||||||||
