In the recent body measurement of the Japanese people, which was taken on a nation-wide scale with the co-operation of the academic and the industrial worlds, the Martin Measurement Method was used. Those who took part in the measurement had considerable difficulties, because they had to measure accurately and in a short time the twenty-five parts of each body of more than two thousand people in one district. But now much of such trouble is spared of us, because SILHOUETTER, an apparatus for photographing figures automatically was devised in May last year. With this Silhouetter we took photographs of the silhouettes of 118 students of Hiroshima Bunka Women's Junior College and by measuring these silhouettes we obtained the measurements of the fifty parts of the body (weight included). With some careful consideration of the ways of taking photographies and measuring Silhouettes, it is possible to get more than one hundred measurements or angles. Silhouettes can be preserved for a long time, which will enable us to follow up the physical development of a person or persons. Since the differences of values between silhouette measurement and living body measurement are found to be within a permitted limit, our results can be used for determining garment sizes and will be of great use in many other fields. |
