| 内容記述 | This paper is intended to comprise part of my study on Arguments on American Problem by Edmund Burke. The purpose is to shed light on his ideas based on Burke’s letters and speeches after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and elucidate their essence. First, an explanation is given on the temperament and posture of the Second Continental Congress. Then, after making observations on the thoughts and actions of Burke through letters he frequently exchanged with Marquess of Rockingham et. al, a review and examination in detail will be given of the ‘Second Speech on Conciliation’ with America, delivered by Burke in the House of Commons on November 16, 1775. Burke opposed the war against the American Colonies stating that there was no advantage to be acquired, and made his appeal that it would be in the best interests of Britain to aim at realizing ‘peace grounded on concession.’ Then he argued that Britain should abandon the right to tax and assign it to the American Colonies, also legitimate the Continental Congress and grant substantial legislative powers with the Continental Congress regarding it as a legitimate organization. Accordingly, although not much attention has been paid to this ‘Second Speech’ in the past, it can be concluded that it has greater significance than his previous speeches ‘On Taxation’ and ‘On Conciliation. |
