| 内容記述 | On noticing that the Catholic Relief Bill of 1792 refused to admit the Irish Catholics to the elective franchise, Edmund Burke（ 1729-1797） determined to lash out at the system of governing Ireland. That was what is called a criticism on the Protestant Ascendancy. In Letter to Richard Burke（ post 19 February 1792）, he found fault with the Protestant Ascendancy from two points of view: first, from the connotation of the term ＂Ascendancy＂, and second, from the fact that even eviler results would emerge with the name of Protestant being attached to Ascendancy. In particular, in the case of the latter, Burke appreciated that Protestant Ascendancy would not only damage religion but also endanger the existence of civil society itself by professing religious persecution. And what is more important is that Edmund Burke was persistent in seeking ways and means to secure ＂the good of the Commonwealth＂ while advocating the constitution, no matter how dismal the situation of Ireland had been. | |||||||||
