| 内容記述 | We Japanese are apt to think that Wales is only a marginal part of Great Britain, and Wales is to England is as our home area "Chugoku-chihou" is to "Kantou-chihou", the metropolitan area in Japan. But, in fact, Wales was once an independent country from England and the Welsh people is descended from the Celts, who had a different language and culture from the Anglo-Saxon family. So we have to know the historical procedure of the merger of subsidiary Wales with its parent England culturally or linguistically as well as politically. The development or decay of the currency of one language depends not only on the outward social influence but on the natives' steadfast and continual endeavor to make their mother tongue survive the linguistic struggle for existence among the language powers of the world. Welsh cultural resistance to the supremacy of England in the long history is noteworthy and to be remembered. In conclusion, I'd like to pick up the meanings of linguistic or cultural unification of Wales and England in order to discuss which instance we Japanese, monoglots in an island nation, should side with/against, the people having one common convenient language like in the USA or a polyglot nation keeping its respective different culture and language like in Europe before the coming age of the EU. | |||||||||
