| 内容記述 | Though the enactment of the Tea Act and the resulting Boston Tea Party constituted a grand turning point in the American crisis，it was the Coercive Acts，passed in order to punish the Bostonian's conduct，that drove the Colooies to seek independence. In this paper，I analyze Edmund Burke's position vis-?-vis the crisis through his speeches and correspondence，with the aim of investigating its meanings in an actual political context. Burke in fact criticized the Coercive Acts severely，not only because he thought them unjust and ineffective，but because he believed their application would result in the American problem deteriorating beyond the point of repair. He also delivered his well-known speech ''On American Taxation" and ardently seconded a motion for the repeal of the American Tea Duty，his object being to ameriolate the hard feelings of the colonists and prevent the spread of the crisis. With these goals in mind，he proposed that the British government revert to ' the ancient policy ' and allow the colonies to tax themselves. It is said that his ideas were scarcely new; nevertheless，''On American Taxation" is remarkable for the richness of its contents. Lastly I conclude that it represents a Synthesis of his former thoughts on American problem，and that his concept of the British Empire was essentially a federal one. | |||||||||
